IHM & Ship recycling

Zener IHM

Zener has carried out IHM services for over 400 vessels which includes processes and activities related to the preparation of IHM part I, II, III, maintenance, and verification of the Inventory of Hazardous Materials for ships. The IHM is a critical document that identifies and lists all hazardous materials present on board a vessel, including substances that could pose a risk to human health or the environment.

The purpose of IHM services is to ensure compliance with international regulations related to hazardous materials on ships, primarily the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention) and the European Union Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR). Ships are required to have a valid IHM and a Statement of Compliance (SoC) to demonstrate their compliance with these regulations.

The IHM is especially crucial for ships approaching the end of their operational life and considering green ship recycling. It provides essential information for safe and environmentally sound ship recycling planning.

By having a comprehensive and up to date IHM, shipowners, operators, and recyclers can effectively manage hazardous materials on board, minimize risks to workers, and reduce environmental impacts during the ship's lifecycle, including its eventual recycling.

Zener Green ship recycling

Green ship recycling compliance monitoring involves overseeing and ensuring that the dismantling and recycling of ships at the end of their operational life are carried out in an environmentally sound and socially responsible manner. The goal is to minimize the negative impact on human health and the environment while maximising the recycling and reuse of materials.

Zener’s compliance monitoring involves ensuring that the ship recycling facility complies with all applicable local, national, and international environmental regulations. These include regulations related to waste management, hazardous materials handling, air and water pollution, and the protection of sensitive ecosystems.

The well-being of workers involved in ship recycling is a priority. Zener ensures that workers have proper training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and work in safe conditions. It also involves monitoring and enforcing occupational health and safety standards at the recycling facility.

Ships contain hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead, mercury, PCBs, and various chemicals. Zener ensures that these materials are identified, safely removed, and properly disposed of or treated according to relevant regulations.

Proper documentation and tracking of recycled materials are essential. Zener ensures that the materials are appropriately reused or recycled and that they do not end up in unauthorized or environmentally harmful destinations.

Zener ensures that the social standards and fair labor practices are being met by the recycling facility towards its workers. This includes monitoring working conditions, fair wages, and workers' rights.

Zener verifies that the recycling facility has adequate emergency plans and response measures in place to address potential accidents or spills.

Zener is continously evaluating the effectiveness of the recycling processes and identifying areas for improvement to enhance overall environmental performance.

Overall, green ship recycling compliance monitoring is crucial to ensure that ship recycling practices are aligned with environmental and social sustainability standards, promoting responsible and ethical ship recycling practices.
